Breadbox Micro Web Server for Nokia 9000 Wireless Platform
Hudson, Florida, October 27, 1998.
Breadbox Computer Company introduces the micro web server for the mobile wireless Nokia 9000 Communicator platform and other GEOS devices.
Edward Di Geronimo, the Breadbox developer in charge of the project, notes that the 4000 byte-sized "telephone web server grew out of some proof of concept work and to my suprise found real interest. We decided then to port it in an HTTP 1.0 compliant format to all GEOS platforms".
The GEOS platforms supported by Breadbox include the entire Nokia 9000 series, the Brother GeoBook, the New Deal Office and School Suites -- on all of which it has been successfully tested -- and others. Initially, the web server ran on the Brother GeoBook and standard PCs. Providing web server services on a 286 PC with 2 megabytes are as feasible as mobile wired use on the low-cost GeoBook or wireless use on the Nokia cellular telephone.
"There is more to it than meets the eye," says Frank Fischer, Breadbox President, "and the success with this technological challenge once again proves the high degree of competence of our developers in the not so trivial area of GEOS programming."
"The mobile web server meets the needs various clients have expressed to me," Clemens Kochinke, Breadbox VP, adds. "Whether you measure environmental data in the boonies or harvest status data on train cargo, this web server on the Nokia Communicator will be invaluable. Important uses also include field mechanics who transmit pictures or data to support engineers at plants for guidance and advice. We are proud of Ed for having brought a proof of concept to a solid application."
Lysle E. Shields III, Breadbox Director of Engineering, notes that the web server soon stood up to the rigorous testing in platforms with multiple concurrently in- and outbound connections. "No small feat on a full-fledged graphical user interface that we can fit into less than 1.5 megabyte of space on a hard drive, ROM or PC card".
