Breadbox Computer Company Provides Brother with New Products for GeoBook
Hudson, FL, July 10, 1998
Breadbox Computer Company has announced that it has delivered a new JPEG Impex filter and Remote Reporter's Tool to Brother International Corporation, Bridgewater, New Jersey for use with Brother's GeoBook PDN, Personal Digital Notebook computer. The GeoBook is based on the GEOS 3.0 operating system from Geoworks Corporation in Alameda, California.
A JPEG Impex filter and Remote Reporter's Tool have been licensed under the undisclosed terms of separate agreements to Brother International Corporation. The JPEG Impex filter will be included in Brother's new GeoPoint software, a GEOS 3.0 Power Point presentation clone for use on the Brother GeoBook. Brother's GeoPoint comes with a GEOS Power Point file viewer which enables users to display actual Power Point presentations directly on the GeoBook's LCD or on an attached monitor or big screen via the GeoBook's VGA port.
The Remote Reporter's Tool, coupled with the GeoBook, is an inexpensive solution for the Publishing Industry that easily enables road warrior reporters to construct stories in the field for quick transmission back to the home office via the GeoBook's built-in modem. The reporter's tool is an editor designed in accordance with Publishing Industry standards and includes a special text input area for SLUGs; word-processor editing features such as find and replace, spell-checker and thesaurus; multiple-story creation and transmission; ultra-easy communications setup, online help, etc.
Frank Fischer, CEO and President of privately held Breadbox Computer Company comments "The addition of the GeoPoint presentation software and Power Point viewer, along with the Remote Reporter's Tool, further enhances the proof-of-concept that Brother's GeoBook PDN is a very inexpensive solution for very serious consideration by sales, marketing, publishing and any other companies looking to save money and get the job done. The GeoBook is certainly a prudent out-of-box alternative that should be examined closely."
Fischer added "JPEG is an essential graphics format to support in the Geobook. And remote communications are paramount for news organizations. We share Brother's vision to enable such communications through the various publisher systems by means of a very simple-to-use program on a hardware platform that is both affordable and secure. The Brother Geobook does not contain a hard drive; a displaced unit does not mean the loss of data." Reporters use PC memory cards or floppy disks for storing data and reports if they do not immediately forward them to the home office. The program includes an almost automatic dial-up and delivery process, thus avoiding errors and the need for costly application training. "We know from our cooperation with IT managers at news organizations and from reporters that they love this software-hardware combination" said Fischer.
